"I think we owe it to children to let them dig their knowledge, of whatever subject, for themselves out of the fit book; and this for two reasons: What a child digs is his own possession; what is poured into his ear…floats out as lightly as it came in, and is rarely assimilated." ~Charlotte Mason

Bible Study

KJV Axis: A Study Bible for Teens. Finally, a stylish King James Version of the Bible just for teens! The King James Bible is known for its poetic beauty and structure. While its language may sound archaic today, a familiarity with this version of the Bible prepares modern students for reading Shakespeare. (The King James Bible was published in the same year that William Shakespeare began work on The Tempest.) The Axis Bible includes interesting introductions to each book, plus timelines and maps to connect Bible events with the history and geography learned in school. The Axis encourages teens to read and study the Bible for themselves, showing them through unique features and engaging design that God’s Word is timeless and relevant to their culture today.

Mathematics

Saxon Algebra 1/2 OR Algebra 1

Saxon is the only major math program on the market that systematically distributes instruction, practice, and assessment throughout the entire text as opposed to concentrating, or massing, related concepts into a short period of time--usually within a unit or chapter. Saxon’s unique approach ensures that students not only gain but also retain essential math skills.

Science

God’s Design for Science, by Richard and Debbie Lawrence. This is a complete science curriculum for grades 1-8 all in one set! It covers life science, earth science, physical science, chemistry and ecology. Learn how real science supports biblical authority and the Genesis account of creation. The curriculum was designed specifically with homeschoolers in mind so the lessons are short, easy to teach, and take a hands-on approach using ordinary household items for experiments and activities. The recommended sequence is... Grade 1: Life Science; Grade 2: Earth Science; Grade 3: Chemistry; and Grade 4: Physical Science followed by Grade 5: Life Science; Grade 6: Earth Science; Grade 7: Chemistry; and Grade 8: Physical Science. Each subject has a "Beginners" section geared to elementary-age students, and when you start the series over again with middle school students you will use the more in-depth "Challenge" section. This way, each subject is taught twice to reinforce previous learning and develop deeper understanding of the concepts. (This also lets you teach younger and older children at the same time.) The curriculum comes with 16 softcovers (including both student & teacher books) and 4 CD-ROMs. All of the worksheets and tests may be photocopied for use with more than one student.

History/Geography

The Story of the World: Volume 4: The Modern Age, by Susan Wise Bauer. The Story of the World with its accompanying Activity Book and Test Packet is a complete history curriculum for one year. You can also read literature that relates to the time period (1850 to 1994).

We recommend a history encyclopedia as well, like the Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of World History, Usborne Book of World History, the Kingfisher Illustrated History of the World, or the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. The main advantage to these encyclopedias are the wonderfully detailed illustrations.

Language Arts

Easy Grammar Plus, by Wanda Phillips. (junior high through adult)

Grammar & Writing Grade 8, by Curtis & Hake. From the creators of Saxon Math! Believing that students would benefit from a language arts series designed with the Saxon model of incremental development and continual review, they commissioned a team of authors to produce Grammar and Writing. This comprehensive yet easy-to-use language arts program covers English grammar, writing, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. The curriculum embeds content from other subject areas so that students learn valuable knowledge while developing English language skills. The texts are written by Christine Curtis, Adjunct Professor of English at Biola University, and Mary Hake, former teacher and homeschool parent. As longtime users of Saxon Math, we’ve found that the Saxon style of instruction works just as effectively in language arts. Homeschoolers will want to buy the kit which contains a Student Textbook, Student Workbook, and Teacher Packet.
