The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
I received my first issue of The Old Schoolhouse in the Fall of 2001 and it instantly became my favorite homeschool magazine. Back then it was only about 32 pages printed on plain paper, more like a newsletter than a magazine. Paul and Gena Suarez must be marketing experts or something, because I’ve watched in amazement as The Old Schoolhouse magazine has grown tremendously - even exponentially - in just a few years! The Old Schoolhouse magazine is full of practical ideas, timely information, and a wide array of resources as it encourages and strengthens homeschoolers to persevere in their calling to educate and disciple their children in the home. I don’t know how they do it, but the publishers are really in touch with the national and international homeschool community and the whole homeschool movement both politically and culturally. The Old Schoolhouse is written by homeschoolers, for homeschoolers, with a Christian worldview. Each comprehensive issue contains something of interest to veteran homeschoolers and new homeschoolers alike, as well as anyone considering homeschooling. The Old Schoolhouse articles have always been of the highest quality. Contributing writers include several notable authors whose names you may recognize, such as Dr. Ruth Beechick. The magazine features many excellent columns like Creation Answers with AiG's Ken Ham, Resource Room for special needs homeschooling with Christine Field, and Diana Waring's HisStory column. There is a Show-and-Tell department where readers share their own homeschool stories, methods, and curriculum choices. A plethora of unit studies, art lessons, interviews, how-to’s, field trip ideas, recipes, product reviews, cartoons, contests, additional articles and resources are also included. Each quarterly issue of The Old Schoolhouse magazine is approximately 200 pages printed in full color on glossy paper. It’s an attractive magazine that always features a gorgeous photo of a schoolhouse on the cover and is suitable for display on a coffee table. Even though The Old Schoolhouse has grown into a professional magazine loaded with slick full-color advertising, the content fortunately has not suffered and you will want to keep every back issue on your bookshelf for future reference. You know those popular magazines that are eye-catching on the surface but they’re so full of ads and hardly any useful articles that they end up being a waste of money? Well, The Old Schoolhouse magazine isn’t just pretty on the outside; it is brimming with information on the inside. The Old Schoolhouse does have a lot of advertisements, but it also contains plenty of good articles so you definitely get your money’s worth. (And even the ads are products that homeschoolers are interested in, like educational materials and curriculum.) The only negative thing I have to say about this magazine is that it’s difficult finding the time to read it all! Even so, The Old Schoolhouse is fun to read and has a homey, warm feel so that when it arrives in your mailbox, it’s like getting a letter from an old friend. Speaking of which, The Old Schoolhouse is a perfect gift for your friends who homeschool or are thinking about homeschooling. Right now you can take advantage of the Buy One Get One for $5 sale. If you buy a one-year subscription for yourself, you can get another one-year subscription for only $5 for a friend. Now you can give yourself and a friend this wonderful gift for Christmas!
