It’s a challenge to find materials that are historically accurate in these days of political correctness and historical revisionism. Well, Drive Thru History America: Foundations of Character is a project that shows American history as it always was—while being taught as it’s never been.
The Drive Thru History team, in collaboration with the careful research of leading Christian historian David Barton (President of Wallbuilders) and curriculum specialist Dr. Nita Thomason, have created a complete standards-aligned curriculum that took three years to develop.
Drive Thru History America: Foundations of Character uses the original writings and words spoken by our Founding Fathers in order to explore the lives of eight individuals who, through a commitment to God and Country, helped lay the groundwork for the United States of America. This values-based course helps students understand the character, faith, accomplishments, and principles of these brave men and women, while also examining their own lives, beliefs and actions.
In Drive Thru History America, students are taken on a virtual trip through American history as it really happened, to meet the people who helped shape the freedoms we enjoy today. Dave Stotts digs into the background, character, values, and ambitions of prominent historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Abigail Adams, Benjamin Rush, Noah Webster, John Quincy Adams, and others. By investigating the Christian worldview of our nation’s founders, it gives a perspective of American history that has been largely ignored in recent times.
The homeschool kit for Drive Thru History America: Foundations of Character is targeted toward middle school and high school students (grades 6-12). It includes nine sessions of DVD content along with reproducible student worksheets, activities, formal assessments, and a teacher’s guide. Each of the nine instructional units emphasize one character trait and one historical figure. The biographical video segments are 10 minutes in length, and your related studies can take as long as you want. The series can be utilized as a one-semester course highlighting the Christian worldview of America’s Founders. The same curriculum can also be utilized as a one-year Character Education program. You can even do a quick overview of the course in nine weeks, in nine days if you watch one episode each day, or in as little as 90 minutes if you watch it straight through.
Drive Thru History America is ideally suited for use as a Social Studies supplement, as it is aligned with the National Council for Social Studies Standards in the areas of American history, government, civics and citizenship. The curriculum provides opportunities for students to apply their skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, organization, information gathering, and communicating. The material also provides suggestions for longer projects such as a documentary, candidate’s forum, newspaper publication, stock market activity, colonial feast, and dramatic presentation.
Drive Thru History America is endorsed by the Christian Educators Association International, recommended by the Home School Legal Defense Association, and recipient of Homeschooling Parent Magazine’s Stamp of Approval. Personally, I think the World History DVDs actually contain more higher quality footage than the American History DVD, but the American History set has the advantage of the accompanying curriculum.
