* * * * * CURRENT SERVICE PROJECTS To Be Announced Click here to read one member's community service report. * * * * * MEMBER MILESTONES This is where we post information about our members and graduates such as scholarships or awards received, college attending, and other accomplishments. 7/21/06 - Leanne Albillar will be graduating from 8th grade in a ceremony at the Phoenix Civic Plaza hosted by Arizona Families for Home Education. 6/9/06 - Heather Charles has been accepted for publication in Who's Who Among American High School Students for the academic year 2005-2006. 5/5/06 - Peter Olsen has been selected for membership in The National Society of High School Scholars. The Society recognizes the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. 11/30/05 - Peter Olsen has been accepted for publication in Who's Who Among American High School Students for the academic year 2005-2006. This is one of the highest honors awarded to less than 5% of American high school students.
July 25, 2005 - Amy and Heather Charles received trophies and $100 each from a Discount Tire Co., Inc. program called Rising STAAR, which awards students for getting good grades and finishing the school year. July 22, 2005 - Amy Charles, 11, and Jaclyn Ciezadlo, 12, graduated from 8th grade in a ceremony at the Phoenix Civic Plaza during the annual AFHE Convention. April 30, 2005 - Amy Charles, 11, was chosen as a winner of the Cat Story contest featured in Practical Homeschooling magazine, issue #62, as announced in issue #64 (May/June 2005). Amy received a letter from longtime homeschool publisher Mary Pride along with an Usborne Wild Flower kit. April 2005 - Amy Charles won first place (blue ribbon) in the 4-H division for Creative Writing and Photography at the county fair. Heather Charles raised two 1st place roosters and won 2nd place Poultry Showmanship at the county fair. She also won Best in Class Division for her Oatmeal Raisin Muffins! Yum! January 22, 2005 - Leanne Albillar achieved the rank of 1st degree Black Belt at Anthem ATA (American Taekwondo Association) Black Belt Academy. She has been working toward this rank since February 2003 when she started studying Taekwondo. Prior to this Leanne had achieved 12 color ranks. She will be continuing her studies for her next goal of 2nd degree Black Belt. Spring 2004 - Heather Charles won a space story contest! Her story, "Oliver in Space," was published in the April/May 2004 issue of Hopscotch: The Magazine for Girls. November 2004 - Heather Charles has recently been selected for membership in The National Society of High School Scholars. The Society invites only those students who have superior academic achievement and are among the top scholars in the nation. The announcement was made by NSHSS Honorary Chair Claes Nobel, a senior member of the Nobel Prize family. “I congratulate Heather on this outstanding achievement and applaud the commitment to academic excellence,” says Mr. Nobel. “The hard work and success of these exceptional young people will ensure a future generation dedicated to their communities and world betterment.” The National Society of High School Scholars was founded to recognize outstanding academic performance among high school students. Membership is by invitation only and includes valuable benefits for members such as scholarships, networking, events, publications, and other unique opportunities. As members prepare for college, the Society encourages them to continue to strive for excellence in all their future endeavors.
