Homeschool Information... Ideas... and Inspiration
~ October 2008 ~

Dear Readers,

October brings a pleasant change in temperature to the desert where I live - no more triple digits! The feeling of autumn is definitely in the air, even though we don't have the colorful, crisp foliage as other places do. Along with the more desirable fall weather, my newsletter is "turning over a new leaf" this month. I really appreciate all of you who told me that my newsletter looked fine the way it was. Personally, however, I just couldn’t stand it any longer. ;) After much deliberation including considering the use of an e-mail newsletter service as someone suggested, I decided that the best thing to do would be to keep the Yahoo Group and give you a link to an online version of my newsletter. That way I can combine the simplicity of plain text e-mails (which some still prefer) with the flexible design of an html newsletter. Even though its appearance is quite different, most of the content remains pretty much the same, and it does seem easier to read don't you think? Hope you like it!

Freebie of the Month*

Introducing my new Freebie of the Month program! First, I've made a basic Reading Record worksheet. You can record up to 50 books per sheet if you print it double-sided. BONUS! While you're at it, you can also print out a Grocery Shopping List. (Two per page, cut in half.) Post this list on the fridge and jot down items that you need. It has my favorite quote on the bottom!

Fire Safety ~ National Fire Prevention Week is held during the second week in October - that's this week! National Fire Prevention Week encourages you to make your home and family safe from the dangers of fire and other hazards. The more you know about fire, the better you can protect yourself. For information and resources, read my Fire Safety article at http://www.knowledgehouse.info/njfkfire.html . And if you haven't seen the movie Fireproof yet, now would be a good time to watch it! Please see the movie review in this issue.

Quote of the Month

“Everything I did was only possible because my parents were dedicated and loving enough to homeschool my sister and me. My mother ... took the time to instruct us every day. Aside from textbook lessons, she had us perform many exercises designed to stimulate our creativity.” ~Christopher Paolini

Famous Homeschoolers

How many people do you know who have written a best-selling book, had it turned into a major motion picture, and earned a six-figure income… before the age of 21? Not many, I’m sure, but such is the life of homeschool graduate Christopher Paolini. You can read his biography here: http://www.knowledgehouse.info/bio_paolini.html (Each month I will highlight another famous homeschooler.)

Verse of the Month

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” ~Psalm 27:1

Reading Between the Lines

Fireproof ~ Our whole family had been looking forward to seeing Fireproof. The opening day, September 26, just happened to be the day after our 20th wedding anniversary. We attended a Fireproof matinee on the first day it was released. What a great anniversary present! We and our three boys – ages 18, 13, and 8 – all loved the movie. A Note From Teri...

Well, I hope you like the new style of my newsletter. It took a little longer to put together this time because I had to create a whole new layout from scratch, but next month the template will already be there for me to fill in the blanks. The best part is, I won't have to worry anymore about whether the e-mail formatting is going to get messed up! If you have any comments, feel free to contact me at .

    Happy Homeschooling!
