Happy May!

The 90th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee will air live from Washington D.C. on May 31 and June 1, 2017. Since 1925, youth across America have participated in school, local and regional bees with the singular hope of making it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. This year, more than 11 million students participated in classroom and school bees before advancing to local bees coordinated by newspapers, community organizations, and universities in the area. The winners of these local bees travel to Washington, D.C., to take part in the National Finals. Each of these spellers started the journey to D.C. in the classroom with a study list and a dream. This year, 291 spellers are participating, including 15 homeschooled spellers! Read their profiles here.

Axis Internship Opportunity

Do you know any college students or grads who are interested in collecting experiences instead of things, want to help younger generations find true freedom in Christ, and desire to build lifelong faith in God within themselves and others? If so, then the Axis Internship might be their next step.

What: 10-Month Internship

Responsibilities: Hone your skills by working on projects in your field that help build lifelong faith; occasionally travel and speak to students.

When: July 18, 2017-April 30, 2018

Where: Colorado Springs, CO

Deadline: May 15, 2017 (for the 2017-2018 School Year)

Below is a description of the internship and the website for the online application:

The Axis Team Member Internship is an unforgettable 10-month experience! Team Members may travel all over the United States and Canada (and possibly other countries!) as part of a team of four young adult speakers. They will speak at Christian middle and high schools, colleges, churches, and conferences about worldview topics, pop culture, intentional living, the influence of media, family discipleship, and so much more! We help students, teachers, families, and entire communities grow together and strengthen their faith in God. Team Members will grow immensely in their faith, build on valuable communication and leadership skills, visit new places, meet amazing people, and make lifelong friends. We are looking for committed followers of Jesus Christ, who are experienced in public speaking, have the ability and discipline to work on a team, and have an appetite for adventure. Applicants must have completed at least 2 years of college [60+ credit hours] or equivalent. For a detailed description of the internship and the online application visit apply.axis.org. Being on an Axis team is a fun, challenging, and life-changing experience. If you are a professional individual who has a high level of responsibility, is teachable and willing to learn, and is comfortable speaking to large groups, don’t miss out on this unique opportunity.

Famous Homeschoolers

Abigail Adams

This month, in honor of Mother's Day, I thought I'd feature a famous homeschool mom from history - Abigail Adams, wife of President John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams. Self-taught herself at time when girls weren't very well educated, she was one of America’s great homeschooling moms. Read about her life at FamousHomeschoolers.net.

Reading Between the Lines

Is Genesis History?

When I first heard about the new IS GENESIS HISTORY? documentary, it was a topic I’m really interested in, so I watched the trailer. After seeing it, I was so excited because it was filmed at four of my favorite locations! (The Grand Canyon and Sedona, Arizona, as well as the lesser known SP Crater and Chino Valley, Arizona.)

I live in Arizona and have been to all these places many times, but I thought it would be neat to see SP Crater on the big screen. It’s the perfect iconic cinder cone that geology textbooks always include photos of, and that we only discovered by accident one day, since it’s not as well known to the general public.

Anyway, I was looking forward to the special one-night theatrical event on February 23, 2017, but then I was sick with a terrible cough and couldn’t go. I was extremely disappointed, and even though there were two encore showings in early March I still couldn’t see it. So I was resolved that I’d have to wait for the DVD, and was counting down the days to its release...

And finally the DVD is available! It's a must-have educational resource for Christians, not just because of the beautiful scenery but also the incredible wealth of information it contains about the reality of science and history as told in the Book of Genesis!
